10 QUICK TIPS TO MINIMIZE CLUTTER

Did you know? Recent studies estimate that between 2 and 5 percent of Americans hoard, which places the number at a staggering 6 million to 15 million.  The Globe and Mail, October 28, 2010, Compulsive collection or hoarder disorder? By Zosia Bielski

  1. When you buy something new throw out or donate something old.
  2. If you have not used it in a year, throw it out or donate it.
  3. If you have family heirlooms, it’s better to give it to your children when you are alive.  This could prevent siblings from fighting over it.
  4. If it does not fit any more donate it, it is easier to repurpose than to throw it out.
  5. When you start a donate box, do not take anything out, turn and walk away.
  6. Create a schedule so that you spend 10 minutes each day on clutter control.  Encourage family members to take part.
  7. Have a place for everything and put everything in its place.
  8. If you see something out of place ex. mail, coat, books, school bags, when you are going that direction pick it up and put it away.
  9. If you are a greeting card keeper, store them in a card box.
  10. Give yourself one miscellaneous drawer.  This is controlled chaos in minimal space.
